 Provides the Basic Fundamentals !
This is a good book if you are new to the world of auto-mechanics and automobiles. It will introduce many things to you such as tools, Fasteners, Bolts, gaskets, etc. It goes through the automobile and briefly describes all the parts... lightly brushing the surface. The ENGINE section will introduce the concept of the piston, crank shaft, cam shaft, etc... and briefly describe how the engine operates along with the different types of engines. The TRANSMISSION section will also describe all parts and how they function.
There are no real details in this book. It is very basic. If you are entering a trades college to take automotive technology then this book will probably be on your list. It introduces the automobile and its parts at a level for those who have not looked inside the hood before. Much of the content (and more) can be found on web-sites.
I gave the book 3 stars because there are 1000 pages. I am sure the book is suitable to those students who have no idea about what's under the hood of a car. The author also puts effort into interviewing technicians and service reps. at garages to give an idea for the life of someone working in that industry. If you plan on learning about engines... to say... tear down / re-build your own.. this book is not for you. I was expecting more detail.
On Second Thought.... I have been doing my own auto maintenance for some time now. I am also technically inclined having worked in the engineering field for some time. Although I personally expected something more advanced, this book will provide the fundamentals required to learn auto-mechanics. If you're just beginning to learn about car engines and how the whole fuel injector / ignition system works etc. then you will definitely find this book useful. I recommend this book to accompany the official factory repair manual for your automobile. With both you will have all the information you need.
It Deserves 4 stars. If it gave more details of the Engine Management System, Transmissions and Suspensions then I'd give it 4.5.
